BioActive-Pack

Bioactive pack

Every year, millions of tonnes of food are wasted because today’s sustainable packaging cannot match the performance of conventional plastics. Standard bioplastics such as PLA often suffer from poor oxygen barrier properties, brittleness and limited functionality, preventing their widespread adoption in high-value food packaging.

BioActive-Pack addresses this challenge by developing a new generation of bio-based active packaging based on Single-Cell Protein (SCP). Rather than relying on synthetic barrier additives, we

use renewable microbial proteins to create a highly tortuous nanostructure that significantly slows oxygen diffusion, extending food shelf life while maintaining food safety and sustainability.

The project combines advanced polymer engineering, reactive processing and industrial validation to translate this technology from laboratory formulation through pilot-scale extrusion to commercial thermoforming. The result will be a scalable, high-performance packaging platform that supports the European Green Deal, reduces food waste and accelerates the transition towards a circular bioeconomy.

BioActive-Pack is not simply a new material—it is a new strategy for combining renewable biology with industrial polymer engineering to create the next generation of sustainable food packaging.
